Privacy Policy

Information You Provide

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and, if you sign up with an email and password, your password. You may also provide a name or business name.

Receipts, expenses and income. To provide the core features of the app, we process the receipts you choose to scan or upload, including the photo of the receipt and the details extracted from it, such as the merchant, line items, quantities, prices, taxes, tips, totals, currency, and the date of the purchase. We also store the expense and income transactions, categories, payment methods, mileage and other details you record or edit.

Location data. If you use the mileage tracking feature, we collect your precise location data (GPS coordinates) to calculate the distance of your drives. This data is only collected when you actively use the drive-tracking feature and grant the app location permissions.

Feedback and support. If you send us feedback or contact us for support, we collect the information you choose to share with us, including your message and your email address.

Information We Collect Automatically

Usage information. We collect information about how you interact with the app and this website, such as the features and pages you use and the actions you take, so that we can operate and improve our products.

Device and technical information. We collect technical information about the device you use, such as your device model, operating system version, app version, language and time zone settings, IP address, and device identifiers (including the advertising identifier, where you have permitted tracking).

Diagnostics. We collect crash reports and performance data to help us identify and fix problems.

Information From Other Sources

If you choose to sign in using a third-party service, we receive limited information from that service in order to create and secure your account:

Sign in with Google. We receive your name and email address from your Google account.

Sign in with Apple. We receive your name and email address from your Apple ID. Apple allows you to hide your real email address, in which case we receive a private relay email address instead.

We do not post anything to these accounts, and we only receive the information needed to sign you in.

Receipt Images and Scan Data

Scanning a receipt is optional and always initiated by you. To provide the core features of the app, we request access to your device’s camera and photo library so you can scan or upload receipts. We process the receipts you choose to provide. When you scan or upload a receipt, the photo is processed to extract its contents (see “AI Features and Third-Party Processing” below). The extracted details, and where applicable the receipt image, are stored so that you can review and report on your transactions within the app. You can delete a saved receipt or transaction at any time from within the app.

AI Features and Third-Party Processing

True Cost uses artificial intelligence to read your receipts and extract their contents automatically.

What we send and to whom. To do this, we send the photo of the receipt you choose to scan to Google, our third-party AI provider, which processes it using its Gemini AI service. We do not send your name, email address, or contact details to the AI provider.

How it is used and protected. The photo is sent only when you choose to scan or upload a receipt, and is used solely to extract the receipt’s contents, never for advertising. Google processes this data as our service provider, under its own data protection and privacy commitments, which provide a comparable level of protection to this Policy. Your receipts and data are not used to train Google’s foundational AI models. We do not sell this data, and we do not share it with third parties for their own independent purposes.

Your choice. Receipt scanning is optional. Before the photo is sent, the app tells you what will be sent and to whom, and tapping to scan is how you give your permission. If you would prefer not to share a particular receipt, simply do not scan it.

Shared Workspaces and Teams

True Cost lets you create or join a shared workspace so that a team can track expenses and income together. If you create or join a workspace, the transactions, receipts, categories and related data within that workspace are visible to, and can be managed by, the other members of that workspace.

When you invite someone to a workspace, or accept an invitation, we process the email address used for the invitation and basic membership details (such as each member’s role) in order to manage access. A workspace owner or administrator can add or remove members and may be able to view, edit, export or delete data within the workspace. Only add to a workspace the people you intend to share that financial data with.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information described above to:

• create, secure, and manage your account;
• provide our products, scan your receipts, and present your expenses, income, summaries and reports;
• extract receipt contents using AI, as described above;
• create and manage shared workspaces and team membership;
• manage your subscription and process purchases through the app stores;
• send you the notifications you have enabled, and respond to your feedback and support requests;
• understand how our products are used so that we can improve them and fix bugs;
• measure the performance of our marketing; and
• maintain the safety and security of our products and comply with our legal obligations.

We do not use your information for advertising profiling, and we do not sell your personal information.

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in the following circumstances:

Workspace members. Where you use a shared workspace, your data within that workspace is shared with its other members, as described in “Shared Workspaces and Teams” above.

Service providers. We share information with companies that provide services on our behalf and process data under our instructions, including Google (Firebase) for authentication, hosting, cloud storage, analytics, and crash reporting; Google (Gemini) for AI receipt scanning, as described above; RevenueCat for subscription management; and AppsFlyer for marketing measurement.

App stores. When you purchase a subscription, the Apple App Store or Google Play processes your payment. We receive your subscription status, but we never receive or store your full payment card details.

Legal and safety. We may disclose information where required by law, to enforce our Terms of Service, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users, the public, or True Cost.

Business transfers. If True Cost is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

Data Retention

We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide our products. When you delete a receipt or transaction, it is removed from your account. When you delete your account, we delete your account information and your saved data from our systems, except for data within a shared workspace that other members still rely on, and information we are required to retain. We may retain certain information for longer where required to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements. Information held by our analytics and measurement providers is retained in accordance with their own retention policies.

Your Rights and Choices

Access and update. You can view and update your account information, and view, edit and delete your transactions, at any time within the app.

Delete your account. You can permanently delete your account, and the data associated with it, from within the app.

Tracking and permissions. You can control app tracking, camera, photo library, and notification permissions at any time through your device settings.

Other requests. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal information, such as the right to access, correct, or delete it, or to object to certain processing. To make a request, contact us at heythere@tinkerterror.com.

Children’s Privacy

Our products are intended for business and personal financial tracking by adults and are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it. If you are under 18, you should use our products only with the involvement and consent of a parent or guardian.

Data Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect your personal information, including encryption of data in transit. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page, and, where the changes are material, we will provide a more prominent notice within the app. Your continued use of our products after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
